Germany could provide perfect source for holiday calendar

Germany is often not the first place to spring to mind for people who are considering the destination for their annual summer holiday, but the German National Tourist Office is trying to convince us that it should be.

The office is attempting to show that the country is more than history, beer and sausage, making it the perfect destination for a holiday, and one which could provide photo fodder for a great holiday calendar.

Klaus Lohmann, UK and Ireland director at the tourist office, said: "Germany is more than beer and Oktoberfest. This is not everything; there is a new Germany. Of course we have attractive landscapes, we do have vibrant cities, and there is the best value for money that I can think of. We do have a diversity of offers which makes it sometimes difficult where to start."

Along with beautiful sights, great food, and interesting day trips, locations such as the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag make for a fascinating historical aspect to any holiday, which could give an interesting dimension to your calendar.

More than 76 per cent of visitors to Germany are from other European countries, according to statistics from the German Federal Statistical Office.
