Photography tips: Black and white

When cameras made the shift from black and white into colour, everyone thought that monochrome's days were over, much like the end of silent movies when talkies finally became the norm.

Many years on, while colour is standard, black and white photography has endured.

Though, life isn't black and white, a monochrome shot is the perfect way to capture a moment and instantly make it somewhat timeless.

Our quick guide below gives you a few useful tips on how to get the most out of black and pictures to add to your photobooks.

Tip number one is knowing when to shoot a black and white shot. Unlike colour, when the golden hour is the best time to capture beautiful pictures, overcast days can be perfect for creating a variety of tones.

The second tip sounds paradoxical – shoot in colour. Most cameras come with black and white options, but if you shoot in colour you give yourself creative freedom to edit the image later.

Keep an eye on ISO (basically measures the sensitivity of the image sensor). Ideally it should be low – reduces what is known as "noise", i.e. graininess.

The final tip, though obvious, is maintain good composition. In black and white photography there is – obviously – no colour to guide your eye around the image. Think about shadows and highlights and how they add depth to a picture.
