Photography tips: Young children

When that innate curious quality first sparks up in a child's brain, unable to be articulated, it is instinctively acted upon. Legs and arms flay around, eyes widen and soak up the world and eventually they begin to crawl. Then they get to an age where they can run around.

Everyone knows how tough it is then to catch a perfect picture of a baby or a child, to keep in a photobook to show one day to their respective partners, much to their adult embarrassment.

In a bid to make it a little easier, here's three essential tips on how to capture those quality images to enjoy for a lifetime.

The obvious tip is not to go for forced poses and instead capture the moment – fast shutter speeds in some cases!

That's not to say don't go for posed shots, but it's more about timing. Whether it's a baby or a young child, kids are alert to "moments", so when it comes to blowing out candles at a birthday, even the most animated of children will relax down. Snap away.

Perhaps the best and most understated tip is to shoot down low. Adults tend to forget the obvious height disparity and you'd be surprised at how much of a difference it makes to shoot from the same height perspective of a child.
