Photography tips: Summertime do's and don'ts

The summer is a great time for photographs. Much like waking up in the morning to a beautiful sun and feeling happy; summer pictures, full of gorgeous natural light, can bring a huge smile to your face. They ooze vitality.

Here's our quick list of do's and don'ts for a summertime photobook you'll want to cherish forever.

First is the tip that throws most people off: don't shoot when and where the sun is at its most powerful. Think instead about how to use that light with, for example, shadows.

The second tip, in some ways tied in with the first one, is finding a suitable place to shoot snaps of people. Why? When the sun is super-bright, people naturally squint, and faces, when all crumpled up, though amusing, aren't the kind of picture you want to keep – unless you use it as a personalised gift for a memorable bash.

Number three is to be aware of the glare. It rhymes so it's an easy one to remember. There's no steadfast rule for the glare as it can enhance a picture as much as ruin it, but where glares are not desired, use either a petal or round lens hood or a cover to prevent the sun's rays reaching the sensor.
