New exhibition celebrates Hungary's contribution to photography

A new exhibition celebrating Hungarian photography from the 20th century can be seen at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Hungary was a hotbed of photographic talent with some of the best known artists having come from the central European country.

Robert Capa, Brassai, Andre Kertesz and Martin Munkacsi, names so synonymous with great imagery, all hailed from Hungary, although many found fame outside of their native home, in Germany, France and the US.

It is as much a celebration of their work as it is a sweeping history of Europe during one of the most transformative centuries in human history.

To say the least, it's an inspiration exhibition that will motivate keen photographers to shoot better pictures, either for their own photobooks or public life.

There are over 200 pictures on show, ranging in date from the onset of the First World War in 1914 and ending in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of a major epoch.

The exhibition has been organised to coincide with the Hungarian presidency of the European Union.

It runs until October 2nd.
