Don't forget to capture the speeches

At weddings, while everyone will naturally be concentrating on the bride and groom, spend some time snapping away at other people when it comes to those all so important speeches.

When it comes to photography this part of the wedding is often overlooked with most photographers capturing the bride and groom's reactions.

That, of course, is more than fine, but you'd be amazed at how much better wedding photobooks would be if this part of the proceedings was expanded on with a few intimate shots of other people.

From tears to laughter to shocked expressions, speeches can be an emotional rollercoaster, making for some supremely memorable pictures.

First tip is about spotting the people who "wear their heart" on their sleeve. What this means is look for people whose emotions are vividly captured on their faces and body movements. Their expressions will induce similar reactions in those looking at the pictures.

Second tip is to opt for a fast shutter speed on a continuous setting. This way you can quickly capture the speech maker's emotions and then quickly survey the room to capture the guests' reactions without missing out on the memorable moment.

Tip three is associated with the above. If you're responsible for collating the images into a photobook or fancy giving the newlywed couple a personalised gift to remember their day, arrange some of the pictures in such a way that they tell a story. Three or four pictures that share a theme can be extremely moving.

The last tip is about visibility. Consider a wide lens so that you're presence doesn't affect the way the guests act. We're often prone to becoming overly conscious of ourselves when a camera is thrust in our face, which in turn can create an awkwardness that doesn't translate well in a picture. You want the speeches to be as natural as possible so keep yourself on the edge.
