Capture those lazy summer days at the beach perfectly

It's the summer holidays, which for many parents means family holiday time.

Whether it's pottering about at a seaside town in the UK or a fancy beach somewhere abroad, make sure you capture those moments to look back on in a memory book with absolute ingenuity.

Think about the rule of thirds more than usual. A water horizon is a great way of balancing a picture, so whether it's a focal point or a background feature, make sure you position it within one of grids to give your picture real impact.

Consider what time of the day you shoot. Although there isn't technically a perfect time to capture a perfect picture, there is however the golden hour – sometimes referred to as the magic hour – which tends to produce softer, superior and warmer lighting.

The golden hour occurs around the first hour immediately following sunrise, which, if you're on holiday, is not going to be a time of day you want to be up at. But fear not, as the golden hour also occurs an hour or so before sunset.

Be totally creative. The beach throws up all sorts of colours, objects and unusual landscapes, meaning you have a lot of "material" to play with.

You can go macro on a seashell and really exploit its rich details or take advantage of the fact that all that water creates rare opportunities for adding reflection to your images, which, like a mirage, always has a mysterious and evocative feel about it.

Don't forget about people. You can easily get caught up in the dramatic features of the natural world around a beach, but take a look at the equal coterie of colourful people sprinkled across the sand for inspiration.

It is, after all, a bona fide hub of activity with people playing sports, swimming, walking, reading and even sleeping, so you shouldn't be short of ideas. Capturing people captures a mood.

And lastly, remember to protect your camera, especially your lens, from sand and water. We wouldn't want you scratching or soaking your prized possession after all.
