Snapping memorable shots with a phone or tablet

Technology has come such a long way that photographers are no longer relying on traditional cameras to snap professional quality photographs.

The more powerful smartphones become and the more accessible tablets are, the greater the opportunity to utilise them in novel ways.

One of the striking things about the digital revolution has not only been the endless choice consumers now have for producing brilliant photographic works for a photobook Henri-Cartier-Bresson would be proud of, but that products are cheaper than ever before, if not free.

Furthermore, greater interactivity of these devices, namely wireless capabilities, means that a photographer can take a picture on a smartphone, upload it to their computer and send it to a website that allows you to create personalised gifts like a mug with a picture of your loved one on it.

From a conventional point of view, such is the power of these devices, that the quality of their photographic end-results – i.e. the picture – rivals that of high-performance compact and SLR cameras.

Five of the best countries to shoot pictures
Welcome to the first in a number of features looking at some of the best photography destinations around the world to get snappy happy in.

This week we concentrate on countries but over the next few weeks and months to come, we will be taking a closer look at specific cities and travel hotspots – as well as a few hidden gems – to give you a comprehensive guide as to where to get the best pictures going.

India

The great, big, spanning subcontinent is a rich and diverse country, loud and raucous, known for its vivid colours and flamboyant festivals, its spirituality and deep religious beliefs.

With historic temples and shrines, buildings that reveal the presence of the British Raj, a wealth of dissimilar cultures and architecture – with the most intricate detail going – India offers a photographer a profusion of things to shoot.

Australia

Head on down under to a country that evokes a certain rugged charm, both in terms of its companionable inhabitants and rough and tumble mountain ranges.

That’s not to say it doesn’t have a soft side to it, what with its ever-blue skies and spotless beaches complemented by equally clear-blue seascapes. Combine this with its soaring cityscapes and modern architecture and you get a country that’s something old and new.

New Zealand

Largely unspoiled because of its geography and its comparatively modest population, New Zealand is a landscape photographer’s dream country to shoot.

With a sundry of terrains and backdrops, from glaciers to fiords, mountains to volcanoes and lakes to rivers, New Zealand is as photographable as places come, a stillness that demands to be captured on film.

Peru

A mystical, magical and mesmerising place, Peru is, by virtue of Machu Picchu alone, a place of fantasy, of unknown treasures, gorgeous natural backdrops and historic sites creating a scene that we think is only possible in movies.

Of course, Peru is much more than its lost city, with snow-capped mountains, jaw-dropping gorges and lively markets, whose equally luminous sellable paraphernalia is matched by their equally sharp dress sense.

US

Of course, without question, the United States of America, is, by its constitutional make up – federal states – so wildly different from border to border that a few steps from one state to another is like stepping into a whole new world.

Compare for example, the dusty plains of Texas, a state reminiscent of cowboy America, to New York – not neighbours by the way – whose skyscrapers and city life mentality represent everything that is new. The end result of your expeditions in the US is going to be magnificently disparate.

Now that we've given you a few hints as to what each of the above offers, the only thing that is left to do is choose which one you go to.

Or which of the above figures as the first destination out of many: they're all beautiful places after all.
