How to keep your images looking tight

We usually want tight images – sharp, crystal clear and clean.

However, it's always the case that we often look back on some of our images in our photobooks and some really good pictures don't quite make the grade. They're good, sure, but great, not so much.

Bear the following tips in mind the next time you really want to invest in getting a super sharp image.

Focus

We tend to stick everything on auto-focus, which although great is not suitable for every shot. At least switch to manual focus and take a dummy shot to assess which is preferable.

Even with auto-focus, you still need to be on top of your game. Ask yourself this simple question: "Is the part of the image you want in focus actually in focus?" You'd be surprised at how frequently this gets overlooked.

Steady hands

Most of us tend to shoot images with our hands. We recommend using a tripod where you have the luxury to do so.

A lot of images lack clarity because of camera shake. Regardless of how perfect you have your settings, there will always be camera shake because it is impossible to keep your hands still.

The best way of reducing movement is to use both hands, arms tight into the body and your body rested against a solid surface. This reduces all the external factors.

Shutter speed

The faster the shutter speed, the less likely camera shake registers. This is because the image is taken super-fast. With a slow shutter speed, the lens is open longer, and consequently, any movement is picked up and magnified.

One of the benefits of a faster shutter speed is that it will also reduce the blurred effect of moving objects. It's that quick.

Note that you'll need a larger aperture in place to balance things otherwise the shot becomes disproportional.

Bear all of these in mind and your pictures will be a lot more refined. The best thing is that it's not hard to do any of the above; it's just about shifting shooting habits more than anything.
