Two years on and online photo library still a roaring success

A library, which along with members of the public, delved deep into their respective archives and attics, boxes and photobooks, to help create a free online gallery, has celebrated its two-year anniversary.

The online gallery, which was set up by Swindon Central Library, is a rich treasure trove that showcases more than just photographs.

Other images that have been scanned and uploaded – currently over 5,000 in total – include drawings, old documents, plans and maps.

The idea for the online gallery was to make the images more accessible to the public from the comfort of their own homes.

Keith Williams, a local councillor and cabinet member for leisure and corporate services, who is also responsible for libraries, told the Swindon Advertiser that he was "extremely grateful" to everyone who had contributed to the project as it was "a fantastic historical resource".

He said: "I would like to thank all the library staff who have worked so hard over the last two years uploading images and ensuring we have a collection to be proud of."

Some of the amazing pictures include some of the earliest ever taken of the town, including a picture of Victoria Street taken sometime in the 1850s.
