Woman from classic Elvis photograph finally revealed

The woman behind one of the most iconic photographs of a young Elvis Presley has finally been revealed, bring to an end an enduring 55-year-old mystery.

Barbara Gray, 75, has announced on the Today Show that she was one half of a black and picture known as The Kiss.

Taken by the photographer Alfred Wertheimer, who also appeared on the TV show, the classic image shows a 21-year-old Elvis Presley locking lips with a buxom blonde whose side and back faces the camera.

Wertheimer told the host that the rest of the snaps he had taken on that day had remained in his own personal photobook for 19 years until the death of Elvis triggered a massive media storm.

He said: "The day he died, Time magazine called me and asked me to bring all my photos over immediately."

Ms Gray revealed that she and Elvis had been on a date but that nothing had come of it.

At the time the pictures were taken, Elvis was still relatively unknown and a long way from being the King of Rock and Roll.

"Maybe he had sparks, but I never even knew who he was," she said.

A new Elvis exhibition has opened up at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix.
