In face of a beating hot sun

The weather outside might be anything but sunny but summer still has a good few miles left it in yet before it passes on the seasonal baton to autumn.

When the big yellow ball does finally make its long awaited reappearance, here are three tips to help you make the most out the beating hot sun.

Reflect the light

This is useful in two distinct ways. Firstly, it can be used to reflect light away if you find that your images are either over-exposed or too direct (which will create silhouettes).

Secondly, where unwanted shadows creep up on the subject or object – which can be construed as a positive – a reflector will redirect much needed light.

Shade away

As mentioned above, shade has its positives, namely it creates texture, mood and narrative, which makes for amazing pictures.

A lot of shade will occur based on your location and the time of day. Play around with natural shades and make your own. If you're on a beach for example, an umbrella is ideal for blocking out parts of the sun.

Block the flare

As seems to be the rule, there are both pros and cons of lens flare. Like shade it can add a natural quality that can't easily be imitated. Equally it can add "noise" that quite simply ruins the image.

To prevent this from happening either use a proper lens hood or make up one yourself. To do the latter all you have to technically do is manufacture a fake one – a piece of card, or use your hand to stop the light from hitting the lens.
