First Brit wins astronomy award

Keen astronomy photographers will need to step up their game after a man who snapped an amazing photograph of Jupiter became the first Brit to win the astronomy photographer of the year award.

Damien Peach's breathtaking shot of Jupiter was commended for its highly detailed portrayal of the gas giant planet, capturing all of its features in extremely fine detail.

What marks it out from other photographs of Jupiter is that it includes extraordinarily detailed images of two of Jupiter's 64 known moons, Io and Ganymede.

The legendary Sir Patrick Moore, who was also on the panel of judges, said: "The standard of this year’s entries was first class, as always, but this picture is a very worthy winner against extremely strong competition."

Mr Peach, who beat photographers from all over the world, walked away with a £1,500 cheque.

His work will be on show at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.
