Architectural photography is a tough game

A new exhibition at the Washington Design Centre showcases the beauty of architectural photography and celebrates the hard work that goes into producing these breathtaking images.

People that are interested in becoming specialist photographers in this field need to take another look at their photobooks – those image that grace the pages, how much planning went into them?

The Baltimore Sun discusses how these images require – demand even – a more diligent, hands on and creative process, as compared to news photography which can be – and has to be – reactive and which doesn't rely on too much artificial interference.

Greg Hadley, a photographer whose work is featured at the WDC, told the news provider: "Architecture is all about space, forms and purpose.

"It is the photographer's job to emphasize the form, show the scale of the space in a dramatic way and perhaps use lighting and composition to illustrate the architect's creation in such a way that no caption is necessary."

From the staging of lighting to meticulous balance of composition to timing, architectural photography can be a difficult discipline to master, but ultimately it's worth it. The pictures speak for themselves.
