Take it back to the 80s old school

Nowadays, fashion tends to be cyclical thing with certain periods of the past coming to be "vogue" once again – chinos and loafers for example, that eighties preppy look for the off-work city slicker is all over the street at the moment.

So why can't the same be said of photography, bringing back certain ways of shooting reminiscent of a particular period of time? Well, it can be with the release a new photobook by Johnny Stiletto called Vintage 80s.

The book contains around 180 black and white street shots from that decade, pictures which portray a transformative era in British life with sharp visual commentary.

From candid shots of Francis Bacon and his companion John Edwards walking down Dean Street in Soho to an intimate shot of a fairly young David Frost searching for a pen or scrap of paper, cigarette hanging from his mouth nonchalantly, Stiletto magnifies the basic to deeper levels of meaning – the moments we would otherwise miss have been captured.
Of his work, the photographer said: "A good way of recording social and historical milestones and the emotions of the time.

"Every time I shot something interesting I put it to one side in a large storage chest. As I was editing these down they suggested stories or topics such as fashion, politics, music, social change, Londoners and so on. I then used the topics to edit the shots."

It's worthwhile browsing your own photobooks and seeking inspiration not just from the eighties, but any decade in your past or your family's past. Not only will it be a sweet journey down memory lane, but a useful approach to improving the creative senses.

You might not immediately come up with ideas, but the subconscious is always working away and certain images impregnate deep into your visual memory. When it comes to taking snaps, you'll be suitably surprised at your newfound creativity.

Beyond the celebrity, Stiletto's photobook also delves deeper into the way of life of ordinary people. From a tender kiss upon the bald head of a man on the tube to a portrait of a well-dressed elderly couple on the streets of London, Vintage 80s taps into the quiet splendour of the everyday happenings of human beings.
