How to photograph landscapes

We forget how varied the natural world is in its composition – it demands to be photographed. Here are some tips to get you producing some stellar images for your photobook.

Don't think static

We often assume that landscape photography is about capturing a still moment, but if you are using the sky as part of the frame then the changing environment can make for an atmospheric shot.

Here you will have to opt for a slow shutter speed – be careful not to let in too much light.

Go wild with your point of view

There are so many angles available to photographers it is a wonder we never use them and as such, landscape photography can suffer from an over-use of chest height vantage points.

So why not add a bit of creativity by shifting the angle from the conventional position.

Down below, at an unusual angle or from an extreme height, the more varied your point of view, the more engaging your images.

Golden hour is the only time to shoot

A perfect autumn morning on the moors might look better set against a cloudy, misty day with lots of fog creating an evocative mood – that there has winner all over it.

Of course the golden hour is a certifiable way of getting epic shots, but what the above example shows is there are exceptions – many of them in fact – that work just as well.
