Image of ponies wins Capturing Dartmoor competition

A beautiful black and white image of four ponies looking rather pensive against a natural landscape has won Dartmoor National Park Authority's photographic competition "Capturing Dartmoor".

David Hixon's stunning photograph, which would look great in any wildlife photographer's photobook, impressed the judges.

Judged by Richard Austin, a Western Morning News photographer, and Adrian Oakes, a landscape photographer, the photograph was one of over 400 entries submitted for consideration.

The photographers were working to the brief of capturing the "special qualities of Dartmoor".

Mr Austin said: "We spent hours deliberating over the photographs but what sets the winning entries apart is how they have captured the sense of place and illustrated how the photographer has waited for just the right moment."

Other winning images included an image of people riding horses and part of the landscape shot at sunset.

"The standard of entries was so high that an additional three photographs were chosen for a Highly Commended award," said Mr Oakes.

Mr Hixon's prize is a full day learning about landscape photography.
