Pros and cons of auto focus and manual focus

With news that Adobe has created a new feature on a yet-to-be released version of Photoshop, we thought we'd quickly look at the pros and cons of manual focusing and automatic focusing.

Manual focusing is particularly great when it comes to planning action shots. Let's say you're at the dogs. Manually set a shot in place where you know the dogs will pass. Take a number of images and one of them should be a keeper. A tripod is recommended.

Auto-focusing is great for all occasions – its versatility is its strongest point. Equally, for those strapped for time and wanting to capture the perfect moment, the speed at which auto-focus captures a smooth, crisp image is a strong attribute.

The downside of auto-focusing is the lack of control – as its name implies, it's all automated. It means once it fixes a point, it sticks at it.

Manual of course offers plenty of freedom, but this demands skill and a deft hand. It's also great for those of you who are into macro photography as it demands a meticulous and precise approach.
