Renowned photobook transformed into mobile tablet app

A photobook which swept off shelves when it was published in printed form has now been redesigned as an app for the Apple iPad.

Capitolio received huge amounts of praise when it was released in 2009, and now photographer Christopher Anderson has decided to re-release it for the modern age.

The book, which features emotive pictures of Caracas, Venezuela, under the rule of Hugo Chavez, has been re-designed for the app, in a bid to make it accessible to a larger audience, who may have found it too expensive in the print form.

Anderson told Adorama Rental: "Now seemed the time to try the experiment because the technology is available (iPhones and iPads) and this particular book is inspired by a cinematic, film reel experience in terms of design. The book’s design concept could actually be enhanced by the swipeable version."

The app version of the book will feature extra images and an interview.

Capitolio, which is named after the building which houses the Venezuelan government, was described by Photo-eye as "a poetic and politicized vision, by one of today’s finest documentary photographers, of a city and a country that is ripping apart at the seams under the stress of popular unrest, and whose turmoil remains largely unreported by Western media."
