How to use a hair straightener
Straightening your hair is a simple process that will give you a sleek look in no time, but there is a magic method if you want to get the smoothest possible results:
1. Wash - to get that super-straight style, your hair needs to be as clean as possible. For the best results, use both shampoo and conditioner, and add a touch of shine serum to get an accented, healthy look.
2. Dry - your hair should be completely dry before you introduce it to a straightener. It’s up to you whether you blow-dry your hair or leave nature to do its thing, but if you do opt for a hair dryer, direct the airflow down your hair to help soften your hair and give it a glossy shine. Don’t forget to spray on a heat protection product to keep your hair happy and healthy.
3. Straighten - now it’s time to plug in your straightener! But before you get to work, clip your hair up into manageable sections. This will make it easier to get a smooth, straight look, as you’ll be dealing with smaller sections of hair. Spray on some more heat protection product and you’re good to go! All you need to do is grip the first strip of hair with the straightener and gently pull it down from the roots to the tips. Once you’ve completed one section, it’s a good idea to pin it up, so it stays out of the way as you straighten the rest of your hair.
How to clean hair straightener plates
When you use a hair straightener, all the products you use on your hair get transferred to the plates. This builds up over time and can affect the heating source, which in turn can damage your hair. That’s why it’s so important to clean your hair straightener regularly.
To clean your hair straightener, plug it in and let the plates warm up. Then, switch the straightener off and unplug it. When the plates have cooled down slightly, but are still warm, apply some rubbing alcohol to a clean cloth and gently wipe the dirt and grime build-up from the plates.
Which hair straightener is best?
The best hair straightener for you will depend on your hair type. If your hair is thick and coarse, you’ll need a straightener that heats up to high temperatures, whereas thin hair is more susceptible to damage from high heat. If your hair is fine, you’re better off looking for a straightener that offers a range of heat settings.
Thinner hair is best suited to ceramic hair straighteners, such as the Remington S8500 Morrocan Oil Shine Therapy Advanced Straightener. Those with thicker hair would benefit from titanium straightening irons, as these heat up quickly to a high temperature and have an ionic charge, which means you won’t have to keep going over the same section of hair too many times.
Which hair dryer is best?
As with hair straighteners, the best hair dryer for you depends on your hair type. If your hair is thick and usually takes a long time to dry, then a tourmaline or ionic hair dryer - such as the Wahl Professional Ionic Style 2000W Hair Dryer - will help to speed up the process by breaking up the water droplets in your hair. This also helps to reduce frizz! For thick hair, make sure the wattage is between 1800 and 2000, as this will get your hair dryed quickly.
For thin hair, consider a ceramic or porcelain hair dryer, like the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Dryer. These dryers provide gentle, consistent heat that is much safer for fine hair.
How to use a curling wand
If you want bouncing, natural-looking waves then a curling wand is your best friend - and they’re simple to use, too!
Begin by holding the curling wand upside-down in your right hand, over the left side of your head. Take around half an inch of your hair with your free hand and wrap it around the wand in a spiral, away from your face. Then, release your hair gently and pull the wand upwards.
Switch hands and repeat this process on the other side of your head. The wand will get very hot, so be careful not to touch it with your fingers!
