About Smart Lighting
What is smart lighting for the home?
Smart lighting is a lighting technology designed to increase the efficiency of energy usage in the home. This can include automated controls based on specific conditions, such as availability of daylight or occupancy within the home.Smart light bulbs are LED bulbs controlled using a smartphone, tablet or smart home automation system. They use less energy than regular LED light bulbs, but last just as long, with a lifespan of around 15-20 years.
How does smart lighting work?
Smart light bulbs use wireless communication standards, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, to connect to an app on a smart device or automation system. Some smart light bulbs require a hub, which allows you to assign the bulbs to various rooms and configure their features. Why you should use smart light bulbs
Many people are drawn to smart lighting because it allows them to control the lighting in their home using just an internet connection, but there are plenty of other good reasons to invest:Money-saving - by using motion sensors to activate the light bulbs, you can make sure they only come on when somebody enters the room. This feature is perfect for hallways and landings, especially during the night. The light sensors can also be set to adjust automatically according to how much natural light the room is receiving. This is referred to as “daylight harvesting”, and can help you save a tidy amount on your electricity bill.
Increased security - smart lighting can be manipulated to make it look as though there’s someone home when your house is empty. This allows you to change everything from brightness to colour in every room. As long as you have an internet connection, you can control your smart lighting system from anywhere in the world.
Improved mood - you can set smart light bulbs to change with the weather, so during rainy periods, you can add warmer and brighter tone, which some people believe can improve your mood.
Better sleep - bright lighting in the evening disrupts the body’s natural production of melatonin, so you can programme your smart light bulbs to switch to a warmer colour and start to dim when it gets closer to bedtime. The gradual reduction of brightness will help the production of melatonin and prepare you for a better quality sleep.
